The outcome of the Gordon Wood Memorial Feature was no big surprise, especially for the faithful watchers of Bob’s Skeet, Gulf Greyhound Park’s best sprinter and now 2006 Gordon Wood winner. Proving his fans right in their betting efforts and keeping them happy, Skeet jumped out of the box and left the hand-selected field in his dust. The annual feature race memorializes Gulf Greyhound Park’s first track announcer Gordon Wood who passed away in 1995.
At $0.90 to $1, Stokes-LaRosa’s pride and joy was by far the biggest fan favorite on the board and rightfully so as he covered the 550-yard course in 29.90, amazingly his second straight sub-30 second time in as many starts. “He broke well and had a clean run to the turn,” said Tommy LaRosa, kennel co-owner and trainer. “For him, that’s almost always a guaranteed combination for another win, and this time was no exception.” Bob’s Skeet had the lead as the group came out of the first-turn and extended at each call, eventually crossing the finish line 9-lengths ahead of Struttin Cowboy, who ran second. LaRosa added that, “the accomplishments of Skeet, and the whole litter for that matter, is a tribute to Robert Stokes in breeding and raising them. Wow, what a litter!”
Skeet, the 75-lb male out of Gable Dodge and Bob’s Fraschilla, Notched his fourth feature or stakes win at GGP in 2006. This year he’s won the $35,000 Texas Round Up, Night of Stars XVII Feature, the Spring Shoot-out, and now the Gordon Wood Feature. Bob’s Skeet also ran 2nd in the Firecracker Feature and 3rd in the $20,000 Texas Fall Sprint Classic, in 2006. With all the accolades at Gulf Greyhound Park in 2006, probably his most noticeable accomplishment came at Derby Lane in St. Petersburg, FL earlier this year as he broke the track record while qualifying for the finals of the first ever $1 Million Race. Although qualifying as one of the favorites, he ran 5th in the $1 Million Race.
The rest of the Gordon Wood Memorial field finished as follows: 2nd – Struttin Cowboy, 3rd – San Tan Jackpot, 4th – SP’s Cold Turkey, 5th – Swagger Stick, 6th – Seegold Hallmark, 7th – Bob’s Laural, 8th – DLT Rollinthunda. |
