Long Shot Surprises Sheldon Levine Memorial Field
A huge box-to-wire effort in Saturday night’s tenth race Sheldon Levine Memorial Feature at Gulf Greyhound Park saw the big long shot, at $12.70 to $1, DLT White Knight (Gable Dodge – Tafe Phobia) from the Lingle Kennel, stun an all-star field of 550-yard sprinters. On Dec. 16, the 23-month old white and red male captured his first piece of hardware in the form of a Sheldon Levine Memorial trophy.
DLT White Knight jumped out of the four-box strongly and left the rest of the field to sort out the place and show positions. The overwhelming favorite, Bob’s Skeet from the Stokes-LaRosa Kennel, found himself left in the box, and had to make up some serious ground to get back into the race. Aside from a couple of fruitless tries by Too Late and Mulberry Hummer, the only greyhound that even threatened the eventual winner was Bob’s Skeet, and his run at the title was too little, too late; despite a wonderful charge down the stretch, he was still two-lengths short of DLT White Knight.
The Sheldon Levine win was his second straight victory and his tenth win since breaking-in at Gulf Greyhound Park earlier this year; however, none were as big as this one. “This puppy ran a spectacular race against the best sprinters at the track,” said Jim Ebbs, Director of Racing. “We almost didn’t use White Knight in the race,” explained Ebbs about assembling the handpicked field. “The field originally had another greyhound in it, but at the last minute Ron (Godfroy, Racing Secretary), placed DLT White Knight in the race instead…good move on his part!”
The Sheldon Levine Memorial Feature is an annual race honoring the memory of the late Mr. Levine, one of GGP’s greatest fans. DLT White Knight won by two-lengths and clocked a quick 30.25 over the 550-yard course to take home the trophy. The remainder of the field ran as follows: 2nd-Bob’s Skeet, 3rd-San Tan Jackpot, 4th-Swagger Stick, 5th-Too Late, 6th-Nozzler, 7th-Mulberry Hummer, and 8th-C Ya Hells Fire. |
