Bob’s Wal keeps Firecracker Title in the Family
Stokes-LaRosa Kennel’s Bob’s Wal made a huge stretch run in the rain to keep the 2007 Firecracker Hotbox trophy in the family, for at least another year. Wal’s littermate, Bob’s Tuscola, won the race last year as his other brother, Bob’s Skeet, 2006 Rural Rube Award winner and Captain of the All-American Team, ran second in 2006. “The Litter,” as their known at Gulf Greyhound Park, has dominated competition at GGP since the middle of 2005.
Bob’s Wal, out of Gable Dodge and Bob’s Fraschilla, picked up the Firecracker Hotbox title for himself, and added to the family trophy case for “The Litter.” In the July 4th feature in front of a big crowd on a rainy day, the 79 lb red brindle male used his explosive late speed to run down the tiring frontrunners.
As expected, Tipp Kurt rushed to the first turn on top, the 15th straight time he’s done it, and led the competition all the way to the stretch. Tip Kurt’s two-length lead at the head of the stretch proved not enough, as Wal came slicing through the crowd to come and get Kurt by one-length.
Bob’s Wal clocked a very solid 30.73 over the 550-yard course on an extremely muddy track. The 3-1/2-year old winner came off as the second betting favorite at $3.70 to $1, while paying $9.40 to win. Tipp Kurt held on to run second, while CL Fast Recovery came up for third.
After the top three finishers, the Firecracker Hotbox finished as follows: 4th – San Tan Ugh Lee, 5th – SP’s Rags, 6th – C Ya Hells Fire, 7th – Justalittlegirl & 8th – U Too Wood. |
