Gulf Greyhound Park was the place to be on Saturday night, March 31, as the March Mania Final Four went to the box in the eighth race to determine the champion of the month-long event. The build-up to the final race was exciting, and the race itself proved to be an ultimate climax to an excellent series.
The race featured four of Gulf’s best sprinters, minus Rural Rube winner and Captain of the All-American Team, Bob’s Skeet, who sustained a slight injury in qualifying. However, two of his brothers qualified for the finals, and they would try to make the family proud. Bob’s Wal and Bob’s Tuscola went to post against Tommy Commander and CL Texas Star with aspirations for another championship for the famed “litter.” In 2006, their sister, Bob’s Streak, won the March Mania Championship, so it was apparent the Gable Dodge – Bob’s Fraschilla had a leg up, but the other two competitors in this year’s final must not have heard the news.
As the box opened in the eighth race, Libby Racing’s Tommy Commander, a two-year old son out of Oshkosh Slammer and KB’s Lynsey Ann jumped out of the one-box to take an early lead. High Star Kennel’s CL Texas Star made an early run down the stretch to nose out Tommy Commander as they reached the first turn, but when they passed the 1/8-pole, Bob’s Tuscola held a slight margin over the rest. Less than halfway through the race, there were already three lead changes with only four dogs in the field-truly the makings of a great race!
As Tuscola captured the lead, Tommy Commander moved up with him and edged Texas Star out of the running, but the biggest closer in the race, Bob’s Wal was still looming just a couple of lengths behind and ready to make his move. When the field hit the stretch, it was still Tuscola holding on to a ½-length lead, but Tommy Commander took charge mid-way down the stretch to edge out the leader as Bob’s Wal started his stretch run. When the three hit the finish line, it was Tommy Commander taking home the hardware by just a head over Bob’s Wal.
Tommy Commander out dueled the field and ran a very solid 30.46 over the 550-yard course, while taking the coveted March Mania crown. The remainder of the field for the March Mania Final Four Championship ran as follows: 2nd – Bob’s Wal (30.48), 3rd – Bob’s Tuscola (30.54), and 4th – CL Texas Star (30.81). |
