Using her experience over the 660-yard course, Allen Kennel’s San Tan Dog Gone stalked the field until the final strides to grab the win in the 19th running of the National Night of Stars. The Night of Stars is a bi-annual event, which highlights sixteen of the best greyhound tracks nationwide, and once again was a huge success. The American Greyhound Track Operators Association sponsored simulcast race card is a charity event with the proceeds donated to greyhound adoption groups around the country.
The Gulf Greyhound Park contribution to the Night of Stars XIX happened in the Thirteenth race and for only the second time in GGP history ran over the longer 660-yard course. The handpicked hotbox race featured some of the top greyhounds on the Gulf Coast of Texas, and the promise for a great race became reality at about 10:28 CST.
Diversity was the name of the game in this race. It featured $20,000 Texas Round Up Champ, CL Texas Star, 2005 Texas Fall Champ, Bob’s Wal, and earlier winner of seven straight over the 660, San Tan View, but this night would belong to San Tan Dog Gone. There were plenty of big name competitors with many credentials; however, it was Allen Kennel’s little brindle female “Dog Gone”, who would shine on the big stage tonight.
As the box broke for the race, it was Libby Kennel’s A’s Aristotle who broke to the early lead, but P’s Racy Katy captured the front as they passed the 1/8-pole. The lead was short-lived as Racy Katy went wide and Aristotle came back to the front. As the pack hit the stretch and headed for home, San Tan Dog Gone positioned herself slightly off the rail as Bob’s Wal about 1-1/2-lengths off the front, went dead-rail. Both Dog Gone and Wal came flying to the line, but San Tan Dog Gone Prevailed at the line by a short ½-length victory over Bob’s Wal, while A’s Aristotle ran a very competitive third. San Tan Dog Gone clocked a 37.57 over the 660-yard course.
The rest of the field ran as follows: Bob’s Wal (2nd), A’s Aristotle (3rd), Button Hole (4th), San Tan View (5th), P’s Racy Katy (6th), U Too Graceland (7th), and CL Texas Star (8th). |
