The saying goes, “when the monies on the line, the big time players step up and make things happen;” and that is just what Bob’s Skeet did at Gulf Greyhound Park in Saturday night’s $20,000 Texas Round Up Championship.

Stokes – La Rosa Kennel’s 2-1/2 year-old son of Gable Dodge and Bob’s Fraschilla took advantage of his superior speed and intelligence to overcome a bad break and trouble in the first turn to take home the coveted crown as Texas’ best sprinter.

Breaking from the seven-post, Bob’s Skeet came out sixth behind a group of solid early speedsters. As Pat Dalton’s Too Late established herself as the frontrunner by the 1/8th –pole, Skeet was forced a little wide and remained in sixth place going into the backstretch. “When he was so far back going down the backstretch, I was just hoping that he had enough bottom end to finish strong and win,” said Stokes – La Rosa trainer Tommy La Rosa. “As the pack entered the stretch, Skeet split (Seegold Hallmark and Gramauldi) and tracked down Too Late just in time to grab the win…he (Bob’s Skeet) is probably the best greyhound I’ve ever handled.”

The 2005 Sheldon Levine Memorial champion and $1 Million Race finalist blasted down the stretch to take the 1/2 –length victory and run a solid 30.33 over the 550-yard course, while collecting the $10,000 and yet another title. “This greyhound has another gear that I’ve only seen a couple of times,” commented Jim Ebbs, GGP Director of Racing. “As he entered the far turn, he made up enormous ground on the frontrunners with every stride…he is the real deal!”

An ecstatic Robert and Arlene Stokes, Skeet’s owners, were on hand to witness the work of their superstar greyhound. “It’s been a long time coming,” commented Robert Stokes, Skeet’s owner. “It’s been a while since I’ve raised a greyhound as fast as Skeet. I knew he could run early on…he just did everything right from the beginning.” As the big wins keep piling in, it is apparent that he is still doing everything the right way!

A large crowd was on tap to see Bob’s Skeet show his stuff, while making him the huge betting-favorite. The Texas bred champion paid $3.00 to win, and made the majority of the crowd happy for the second time on Saturday. Earlier in the afternoon, the same large crowd watched and wagered as Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby simulcast from Churchill downs.

Behind Bob’s Skeet, the rest of the field finished as follows: 2nd – Too Late (1/2-length, 30.37), 3rd – Seegold Hallmark (3 length, 30.55), 4th – Gramauldi (3-1/2 lengths, 30.57), 5th – C Ya Costa Maya (7 lengths, 30.80), 6th – Swagger Stick (7 lengths, 30.81), 7th – Trashy Talk (8-1/2 lengths, 30.92), and 8th – For The Show (8-1/2 lengths, 30.93).
