Too Late is Right on Time for Slugfest Title
|
The second ever Summer Slugfest Champion was crowned in Saturday evening’s tenth race at Gulf Greyhound Park as the large crowd cheered on the “dogs of summer.” Pat Dalton’s Too Late jumped out of the one-box and outlasted the field to win the 2nd Annual Summer Slugfest in an impressive fashion.
Although Allen Kennel’s San Tan Jackpot would mount a late race rally to try to take down the front running Too Late, her name said it all, and Jackpot would be “too late” to catch her. The 2 ½-year old fawn female out of Gable Dodge and May Morning hurried to the lead and extended to a one-length edge over kennelmate Spare Time at the 1/8-pole. Too Late left her kennelmate behind and held off Jackpot by ½-length, while setting the pace over the 550-yard course in 30.58.
“It was so good to finally see her (Too Late) get a stakes win,” said Sissy Sabell, Pat Dalton trainer. “She’s been in about eight or ten finals…she always seems to get second or third, but she got hers tonight, and that was good!” Actually making the final field in eleven stakes and hotboxes in 2005 & 2006, Too Late has been one of the most consistent sprinters at Gulf Greyhound Park since she broke-in in June 2005.
The remainder of the field finished as follows: 2nd-San Tan Jackpot, 3rd-C Ya Costa Maya, 4th-Bob’s Zipon, 5th-Spare Time*, 6th-Swagger Stick, 7th-For The Show, & 8th-WWW Owe Zone. |
